Leaving on my first solo-trip.
Maybe it was the quote that stuck with me, or maybe it was the fact that it said “Hippo” in his title. But it was the first page I read in my travel journal that one of my friends gave to me when I was about to embark on my 5 week solo-trip across Europe. Something about that quote inspired me, and I’ve been anxiously reading the pages of travel ever since.
The westernmost point of Europe: Cabo da Roca.
Hi, my name is Kat, and I live in Cleveland, Ohio. I’m originally from a tiny town of about 700 people in Kentucky with no stoplights. So let’s just say my yearning for travel came pretty early on in life, as I knew that there was more out there to see. However, I had only traveled to the beaches of South Carolina (sometimes Florida too) up until university when I got on a plane for the first time and studied abroad in Grenoble, France.
“I got lost in Budapest and found myself in France.”
The Travel Bug
That’s when the travel bug hit. Hard. I visited 9 different counties, all with various cultures, and my eyes were opened. I learned so much about the locations to which I traveled, as well as myself, and wanted to learn more: I was hooked. A year later, I went back to Europe by myself and backpacked for 5 weeks, visiting 7 new countries. Then I went back again for 3 weeks visiting 7 different countries as well as visiting some favorites to explore more of the culture. I swam in the inland sea in Malta, dove off cliffs in Dubrovnik, learned to ski in the Alps, hiked on mountains in Seattle, and rode a tandem bicycle in Seville. I got lost in Budapest and found myself in France.
Visiting Malta with my friends I met while studying abroad.
I love all the wonderful people I’ve met along the way, and the different perspectives I’ve heard. Through traveling, I’ve learned about who I am, what I really want in life, and what actually matters to me. Traveling isn’t just about the cool sites and saying that you’ve been places, it’s about the people you meet along the way and the experiences that really changed you. That’s exactly what travel has done for me. It makes me feel liberated and empowered. It’s why I’m so passionate about it and want to inspire people to get out there.
Seeing the World with a 9-5 Job
However, like most people, I’m also working a full-time job, and only have the typical limited time off per year. While that doesn’t mean I can travel to my heart’s content, that isn’t stopping me from seeing the world. I’m also not emptying my pocketbook for it. That’s why I’m here to show you that you don’t have to have tons of cash, or even tons of time, to grab your backpack and start exploring. It’s about knowing the right resources and having the determination to make it happen. So I’ve created Kat and a Backpack! I hope you can feel inspired to get out there, see the world, and save money while doing it.
Have a wanderful day!
